2024 Local Government Elections

Get ready to vote local.

Queensland’s local government elections are on 16 March 2024.

Voting is compulsory. Optional Preferential Voting is the system used for Redland City Councillors and Mayor.

The timetable for the 2024 local government elections is set in accordance with the Local Government Electoral Act 2011. The elections officially commenced following publication of the notice of election.

  • Notice of election – Monday, 29 January 2024
  • Postal vote applications – Monday, 29 January 2024 to 7pm on Monday, 4 March 2024
  • Candidate nominations – Monday, 29 January 2024 to 12 noon on Tuesday, 13 February 2024
  • Ballot paper order draw – 10am on Wednesday, 14 February 2024
  • Early voting* – Monday, 4 March to Friday, 15 March 2024 (excluding the weekend)
    *Early voting times will vary depending on location. Check early voting dates, times and locations
  • Election day* – Saturday, 16 March 2024.
    *All polling booths will be open from 8am to 6pm. Find your nearest polling booth
  • Postal vote completion deadline – 6pm Saturday 16 March 2024
  • Postal vote return deadline – Tuesday, 26 March 2024

Before the elections, check or update your enrolment details at the Australian Electoral Commission website and confirm which local government area you are enrolled in.

You can vote:

Anyone can apply to postal vote.

Applications will close at 7pm on Monday, 4 March 2024.

If you are registered as a postal voter or live in a full postal council area  , your postal voting materials will be automatically sent to you. To check if you live in a full postal area, please click here.

All voting materials will be sent after candidate nominations close.

Complete your vote as soon as you receive it, following the instructions carefully.

Postal votes must be completed by 6pm on election day, and the ECQ must receive it by Tuesday, 26 March 2024 for it to be counted.

Anyone can vote early, but you’ll need to check operating dates and times for your local government area.

Early voting will be available at around 170 locations across Queensland between Monday, 4 March and Friday, 15 March 2024, not including the weekend.

Remember to bring your maroon voter information card with you for quicker voting.

Assisted Access

On election day, Saturday, 16 March 2024, you can vote at a polling booth in your local government area.

Over 1,000 polling booths will be open across Queensland from 8am to 6pm.

Remember to bring your maroon voter information card with you for quicker voting.

Eligible electors can also vote by:

  • telephone
  • mobile voting

Telephone voting will be available between Monday, 4 March and election day, Saturday, 16 March 2024.

Mobile voting will be provided to electors in certain locations such as aged care facilities which have been designated as ‘declared institutions’.

These services are only available to eligible electors.
